Hello, I'm Takashi Kitao, a software engineer. I used to be a game developer and designed several game titles for PlayStation. My specialty is graphics and game development. Now I'm focusing on development of Pyxel, an open source project on GitHub.

Pyxel is a game engine, which is designed for Python and consists of the Python module and dedicated resource editing tool.

The characteristic points of Pyxel are:

• Can be easily used from Python and can be used in combination with other modules since it is an extension library for Python
• Multi-platform compatible and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux includes Raspberry Pi
• Suitable for learning programming because it has a simple specification that is conscious of retro game consoles such as NES
• Includes the resource editing tool with which users can create graphics and sounds without installing third party tools
• MIT licensed and can be used for free even for commercial use

Pyxel's ease of use, fun, and compatibility with Python have attracted a lot of attention from various people, and in 2018, when the project was released, it became the number one project in the world on the daily ranking of GitHub. The number of users is still increasing all over the world, and in 2023, the number of stars of the project exceeded 12,000 stars. It is also used in actual programming classes at many colleges, high schools and cram schools.

As the developer of Pyxel, I would like to continue to add features and maintain it for programming learners, hobby game developers, and children. Because when I was young, I was able to step up my programming skills step by step with the development of computer technology, but nowadays there is a lot of information, but it is difficult to find a practical learning environment where programming beginners can enjoy learning programming.

However, in order to continue the development of Pyxel, I should build a test environment for each platform and continue to follow the regular OS updates, secure time to analyze and solve defect reports from users, etc. In fact it takes a lot of effort.

Therefore, with the support of the GitHub sponsors, I would like to secure development equipments and technical materials, and also secure time for user support.

I would like to achieve the following with Pyxel in the future:

• Web browser support with which users can try Pyxel programming and show their works easily
• Major renewal of the resource editing tool. In particular, enable full-scale tone creation and composition with the music editor
• Expansion of tutorials and samples for programming beginners
• Hosting a fun game jam for Pyxel users around the world, including children
