Dan Miall has built his company, BirdDog, successfully over the last years by recognising early on the value of NDI - or Network Device Interface - technology. NDI is key to helping many create their own live production environments with a lower barrier to entry than otherwise required. The technology makes it possible to deliver and receive high-definition video over a computer network in a low-latency and high-quality manner. It's royalty-free and allows for frame-accurate switching. NDI can carry video, multichannel uncompressed audio, and metadata, and provides a range of feedback options.
It's a pretty remarkable technology, first announced in September 2015, and Dan saw its value right away. In fact, BirdDog was an early adopter of NDI, going on to create its own range of NDI PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras and a range of software applications.
Dan spoke to iTWireTV to help us understand the use cases for NDI, the type of customer he serves, the skills needed to produce broadcast quality live video, the impact of the pandemic on video solutions, and where BirdDog is heading to next.

It's a terrific chat, and Dan is a highly engaging and interesting speaker. And, while the YouTube reproduction of our conversation may not do him justice, Dan came across in sharp, crisp, brilliant video. Also, be sure to check out the wall of devices behind him.
And - why the name? Dan explains the reference in our chat.
