Unable to use the GitHub Copilot extension in the IDE ❓

We recommend you follow the quickstart guide for GitHub Copilot while setting up GitHub Copilot on your machine. For more information, see "Quickstart for GitHub Copilot."

The GitHub Copilot extension is frequently updated to fix bugs and add new features. It's important to keep your extension up to date because older clients cannot communicate with the GitHub Copilot servers. Update your GitHub Copilot extension on all the machines you have it installed. For more information about configuring GitHub Copilot in a supported IDE, see "Configuring GitHub Copilot."

Copilot Chat features aren't working for me in VSCode? ❓

Check each requirement if Copilot Chat doesn't work:

Make sure you are on the latest version of Visual Studio Code (run Code: Check for Updates).
Make sure you have the latest version of both the GitHub Copilot and GitHub Copilot Chat extensions.
Your GitHub account that is signed into VS Code must have an active Copilot subscription. Check your Copilot subscription.
Ensure that Copilot Chat is correctly setup. See the setup guide.

Error: "GitHub Copilot could not connect to server. Extension activation failed" ❓

This error indicates that you either do not have a GitHub Copilot subscription, or there was an error connecting to the GitHub API to request a token to use GitHub Copilot.

To request another token from api.github.com, try signing in and out of GitHub Copilot from your IDE. Once you've logged out, GitHub Copilot will prompt you to sign back in.
If you still cannot connect to the server, you can create a discussion in our discussion forum. You can include log files from your IDE to help us troubleshoot the issue.

Getting error "Invalid copilot token: missing token: 403 - GitHub Copilot could not connect to server. Extension activation failed: At this time, Copilot is not available in your location" ❓

Due to current trade controls, your GitHub account might be restricted from making use of Copilot. This is a region-based restriction and applies to all users located in some trade-restricted countries, being flagged for the same earlier reasons, and is separate from other GitHub services. I like copilot although it is not perfect. But i don't understand why you put a "Memoization" example on the website, that produces python-code that isn't even indented:

Buenas tardes, alguien sabe porque no está funcionando la extensión de gitcopilot para vscode...desde ayer que me aparece recargando pero no se activa. Ya probé desabilitando la extensión y volviendo activar, luego cerrando el vscode y abriendo nuevamente pero no carga.
El icono de gitcopilot del vscode queda dando vueltas pero no se carga. Agradezco su ayuda

When the icon sits and spins for me, I go to a new line and type abc , then let Copilot do its thing (it should prompt something along the lines of def ghi jkl). Once it prompts, the icon stops. Then I just undo once or twice.

I also noticed, at least on my system, when it sits and spins like that, one of my GPUs spins up to like 20-30% until I run through that process.

hello hostor, I'm get in some unknown reason when i try to auth the device, means i can get the device code and open the github site,but when i paste the device code and click auth confirm button, idea still show me need to login to github, even i used the http proxy, could u help me out. really appreciate that.

This is a known issue that our engineering team has been actively working on. In the meantime, there is a workaround:

For Mac OS

Use mac-ca to make all certificates in MacOS keychain available to VS Code extensions
Restart VSCode

For Windows

Use win-ca in VSCode to force some of those certifcates. Another option that has worked for others is to setup a local, transparent proxy as described by some of our community users.

Hi Akash, We were able to fix the issue using win-ca extension for VS code, however the current issue is with Visual Studio 2022 Professional version in Windows Operating System, I see in the article that it says we could properly install the proxy certificate in the machine in OS trust chain, I think we have a business subscription. Any idea how to do this? I am logged in Copilot (re-logged in for good measure), I get suggestions (as before with comments), but still see the following exception, I am trying to use the new chat capabilities after having installed the Visual Studio Extension

Are you using the latest version of VS Code Insiders with VS 2022? . You may need to sign in to GitHub, and will need to authorize the Insiders build if that hasn't been done. Also, restart your editor for allowing any changes to update.

I use copilot X in VScode, and when I use copilot to explain a piece of code, I will take some notes at the same time. But I found that when I click the cancel button to close the chat box after making some notes, the previous notes will also disappeard。

I'm using Visual Studio 2022.

When I want to select some codes for analysis by using "/explain this", the chat windows returns the codes not found (it seems the copliot can't understand which codes I selected).

But it works fine in vscode.

While using @workspace command it shows Maximum Call Stack size exceeded error

Some ideas I found from copilot itself is :

**Infinite Recursion: This is the most common cause. If a function calls itself (either directly or indirectly through other functions) and doesn't have a proper base case to stop the recursion, it will keep going until the stack overflows.

Deep Recursion: Even if recursion isn't infinite, if a function calls itself too many times before returning, it can still cause a stack overflow. The exact limit depends on the size of the stack, which can vary between systems and configurations.

Large Stack Variables: Each function call adds a new frame to the stack, which includes space for the function's variables. If these variables are very large, the stack can fill up with fewer function calls.**

I am using the latest version of Webstorm (#WS-241.14494.235) and the latest version of GitHub Copilot (1.5.2.5345). Unfortunately, I no longer get code suggestions from Copilot.

I've linked my student mail (from my college) into my personal account.
When I try to "Join GitHub Education!" and try to get copilot from https://education.github.com/benefits , I get this problem.

But in my browser preferences I have the Github with permission to access my location.

Can anyone help me so that i can get copilot pls.

hey could someone help me out. having some issues getting copilot to actually run. in the latest version of VS2022 17.9.6. github account is linked, i have confirmation email and access to copilot, i have installed the extension. i even modified VS to install the c++ dev kit on the recommendation of a few people on here. still getting nothing. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm on 17.10.0 Preview 4.0. I had to reauthenticate in the non-preview version of Visual Studio. Then when I came back to VS Preview, Copilot chat worked.

Copilot in VSCode is not working for me. I have an active subscription. I opened the VS Code Output terminal and specifically the Extension Host terminal to see that activity for each extension. This is what it says for the copilot extension:
